The journey began on Thursday morning out of JFK airport on American Airlines. Our group of three connected in London, took a night tour and then landed in Naples, Italy on Friday morning. Feelings finally started to settle in when the unpacking began. Now things have started here in Castellammare di Stabia. We are all moved in and getting to know everything around us. After moving in and eating the great food the Vesuvian Institute has to offer, we explored the center of the city. In town we went to a local coffee shop and tasted an Italian Espresso. Later that night we experienced fireworks from our terrace, which were coming from the center of town.
On Saturday we had the chance to learn the ways of the train and as a class traveled to Napoli, which is about 45 minutes away. Once there we explored the city and ate lunch at a local Pizzeria. Here everyone got their own pizza for less than 7 euros. We saw our first glimpse of siesta when we finished lunch and walked back to the train station. Almost all of the stores on the way back were either closed or closing and they were not going to open until five p.m.
Sunday we had a free day and a majority of the class went off to Sorrento. We split up into smaller groups and explored what Sorrento had. We first stopped by a small store and bought some souvenirs. We decided to go down to the water, so we had to go down the side of the cliff. At the bottom we saw the crystal clear blue water of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the marina. From the bottom we viewed the large cliffs where the hotels properties are located. After walking the coast we made our way up the stairs to the center of the city. For lunch we ate outside at a local restaurant. We ended up at a football stadium and watched the second half of the game. After we tried gelato for the first time and caught the train back to the Vesuvian Institute.
