With a dramatic, five-set win over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this past Sunday in Providence, the Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team advanced out of its National Collegiate Athletic Association regional bracket and opens play Thursday in the NCAA's Elite Eight. The undefeated Wildcats will play Thursday (8pm ET) against tournament host Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., with a chance to advance to the national semifinals.
JWU placed three players on the NCAA Providence Regional All-Tournament Team, Katie Leidhold, Kate Walker and tournament MVP Brylee Frank, while recording wins over Elms College, Wesleyan University and the Engineers to secure a spot in the Nov. 16-18 national tournament.
All season long, JWU has been a dominant force in the Great Northeast American Confernce (GNAC), finishing its second consecutive season without a loss and capturing a third consecutive conference championship.
“The goal is never to go undefeated, the goal is to win the championship at the end,” Women's Volleyball Head Coach Nancy Somera said prior to the regional tournament. “How you can get there can happen in a lot of different ways. We just happened to have two regular seasons that have been undefeated, but none of that's going to matter now that it's playoff time.”
