11/6/2017 | The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced today that Johnson & Wales' Providence Campus will host Elms College, Wesleyan University, Wellesley College, Tufts University, UMass Boston, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Maine Maritime in the first round of women's volleyball tournament play beginning Friday, November 10 through Sunday, November 12.
All season long, the Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team has been a dominant force in the Great Northeast American Confernce (GNAC), finishing its second consecutive season without a loss. This past Saturday, the No. 10-ranked Wildcats defeated Simmons University 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-6) to capture their third-straight conference championship.
“The goal is never to go undefeated, the goal is to win the championship at the end,” Women's Volleyball Head Coach Nancy Somera said. “How you can get there can happen in a lot of different ways. We just happened to have two regular seasons that have been undefeated, but none of that's going to matter now that it's playoff time.”
JWU improved the 10th-best home court winning streak in NCAA history to 39 matches. The Wildcats are 65-1 over the last two seasons. Three Wildcats also qualified for the All-Tournament Team: Brylee Frank, Katie Leidhold, and All-Tournament Team MVP Kate Walker.
“Now everyone we're going to see across the net is a talented, play-off worthy team. It gets exciting this time of year because you know every time you step out on the court you're going to be challenged by the best,” Somera said.
JWU will face Elms College on Friday, November 10 at 8pm in the Wildcat Center on JWU Providence's Harborside Campus. If JWU can win all three matches in the regionals at home, they will advance to the national quarterfinals on November 17, at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
